Here in few simple steps I am going to show you how to do a landscape painting of sunset in desert….
Things you are going to need are:
A canvas (preferably) or a chart paper (size you prefer, can either be a full size chart or one-fourth of it), acrylics paints- crimson red, yellow, orange, white, navy blue, dark green, black, pink and magenta- paint brushes (including a brush of size marked 0), a palette (to mix colors) or here I used a throwaway plate, a glass or cup with water to rinse your brush and a piece of cloth to clean your brush.
Also include a discarded tooth brush. I’ll show you the neat trick you can do with it in the end!
First take your sheet of preferred size. Here I have taken a quarter sized chart paper. Preferably use a canvas or use paper with texture. And if you don’t have any just make sure that you do not use excess of water. Here is what I have done. I gave a thin border and drew a small line few centimeters above the base. Mainly to distinguish where I want the ground level to be.
First I used yellow and gave few strokes then I added small amount of orange to it and made few more strokes. Make sure that you make a clear distinction in the color layers. As you may have noticed the sky during sunset, the colors do not jump from one to another. There a clear difference in the intensity. Visualize that and give the strokes.
After you give a couple of crimson red strokes, make a patch of white. Then take very little navy blue paint and mix well. then as you go to outer area increase the density of navy blue and then to the rest of area add black.
Give layer of magenta in the bottom. Add little bit of yellow, this will give an effect of reflection of the sky. Add few palm trees in your landscape. Make sure at least on your sand dune is in black.

There is no color like black!
Once its dry, cover the center portion with a paper. Take the toothbrush and put a small layer of white paint on it. Make sure not use too much of water. Once that is done, use your forefinger to sprinkle it on a plain paper aside. Then sprinkle few times on the top and twice or thrice in the bottom. We are doing the same in the bottom as it gives an effect of sand reflecting light.
Instead of this idea, you can use the smallest brush (size 0) but you may not get the desired effect. Some dots will be big and some small. You can use brush if you only want few starts (5 to 6 of tiny white dots) and to give an effect of shooting star.
Give the border a color or two. Here I have given yellow ochre-226 (inner layer a lighter tint).
